Description
Phenylephrine, also known as Neo-Synephrine is an alpha-adrenergic
receptor agonist used primarily as a decongestant. It belongs to a
class of medications called nasal decongestants. It is used as an
agent to dilate the pupil and to increase blood pressure. It works
by shrinking veins and arteries. It is marketed as a substitute for
pseudoephedrine. Constriction of blood vessels in the nose, sinuses, and chest allows drainage of these areas, which helps in decreasing
congestion. Constriction of blood vessels also affects blood
pressure. Available as tablets, injection solution and syrups.
Uses
- Phenylephrine is used to relieve nasal discomfort which is
caused on accoubt of colds, allergies, and hay fever.
- Relieves sinus congestion and pressure. It works by reducing
swelling of the nasal passages.
- When used as a tablet or syrup, phenylephrine treats
congestion and the common cold.
- When used as injection solution, the medicine helps in
maintaining adequate blood pressure and treat certain types of
irregular heartbeats.
How to use ?
- Use as directed by your doctor as directed in the package. If
you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
- Your doctor will administer injectable phenylephrine.
- The tablet or the syrup is recommended to be taken every 4
hours as needed. Do not take more than six doses in a 24-hour
period.
- Stop taking phenylephrine if you donot recover within 7
days.

- Before using phenylephrine, tell your doctor if you have high
blood pressure, heart disease, arteries hardening, thyroid
problems, irregular heartbeats, diabetes, glaucoma, an enlarged
prostate, liver disease or kidney disease.
- If you are allergic to phenylephrine or any other
medications, let your doctor know about it.
- Avoid taking this medicine during pregnancy and breast
feeding.
- If you are over 60 years of age, there are side effects from
phenylephrine, in which you have to take a lower dose.
